Overview

A Dalian Underwater Robot manufacturer was tasked with designing a new type of underwater robot to meet monitoring requirements for offshore seabed environments. During development, the design team encountered significant challenges related to unstable communication, high cable requirements, and extensive communication distances. Recommended by their R&D team, the designers showed interest in testing Ourten's high speed 2-wire Ethernet Extender OT-PLC602 solution.

Challenges

The primary issues faced included:

● Unstable Network Communication:

Network data from sonar and video transmitted through narrowband modems were slow, prone to interruptions, and unreliable.

● High Specification Cable Requirements:

The system required robust and large-scale cables with limited available length and high cost.

● Extreme Water Depth:

Environmental monitoring needed to operate reliably at depths of 500-600 meters.

Solution

After comparing various options, the team selected Ourten's 2-wire Ethernet Extender OT-PLC602 solution due to several critical advantages:

● High-Speed Broadband Transmission:

Broadband modem capability allowed real-time transmission of 100Mbps data streams, significantly enhancing reliability and interference resistance.

● Standard Two-wire Communication:

The ability to transmit network signals over standard two-wire cables eliminated the need for expensive custom-made, heavy-duty cables.

● Extended Communication Range:

With an effective communication distance of 600-1000 meters, the OT-PLC602 Ethernet Extender fully met the required operational depth.

Results

The implementation of Ourten's 2-wire Ethernet Extender OT-PLC602 successfully resolved underwater communication difficulties, achieving a cost-effective, high-performance communication system. This significantly advanced the project's capability for efficient and reliable underwater environmental monitoring.
